In a ceremony held in Mexico City, a veteran pitcher was recognized for his outstanding performance in the Mexican Baseball League. The 33-year-old athlete received an overwhelming 94 votes from the electing committee, solidifying his position as the top pitcher of the year.
The runner-up, a seasoned player, garnered nine votes, while other notable pitchers trailed behind with seven, six, two, and one vote, respectively. Throughout the season, the award-winning pitcher demonstrated exceptional skill, boasting a perfect 10-0 record and an impressive 2.48 ERA in 14 starts.
His remarkable achievements didn’t stop there. He led the league in strikeouts, racking up an astonishing 120 in just 83⅓ innings. One of his most notable performances came on June 21, when he set a new Mexican League record with 19 strikeouts against a rival team. This feat surpassed the previous record of 18, shared by three pitchers.
Earlier in the season, he tied a long-standing Mexican League record by striking out nine consecutive batters. This impressive display of skill echoed the achievements of legendary pitchers José Ramón López and Gary Williams, who initially set the record in 1964 and 1979, respectively.
After facing setbacks in his professional career, including a lengthy suspension and subsequent release from a prominent MLB team, the pitcher sought to revitalize his career. Following a stint in Japan, he joined the Mexico City team, initially signing a five-game contract before committing to the remainder of the season.
This latest accolade serves as a testament to the pitcher’s perseverance and dedication to his craft. As a former Cy Young Award winner, he continues to prove himself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of professional baseball.
