Racing Veteran Secures Thrilling Victory in Season’s Penultimate Event
In a nail-biting finish, seasoned driver Aric Almirola claimed his second win of the season in the Xfinity Series playoff opener at Kansas Speedway. The 40-year-old, who has six career Xfinity victories, proved that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.
Almirola’s triumph was a testament to his perseverance, having overcome a pit road incident and making contact with the wall earlier in the race. Despite dropping back to 30th place, he refused to give up, using his experience to methodically work his way back to the front.
The final 40 laps saw an intense battle between Almirola, Cole Custer, and Chandler Smith, with Smith leading for most of the way. Custer made a bold move to take the top spot with 10 laps to go, but Almirola had the last laugh, making the decisive pass with just three laps remaining.
“This win means everything to me,” Almirola said. “I was given a second chance to compete at this level, and it’s an incredible feeling to be able to do what I love and be successful at it.”
Custer finished second, his first top-10 finish at Kansas Speedway, while Smith took third place. The two drivers had a heated exchange after the race, with Custer expressing frustration over Smith’s aggressive driving style.
Regular-season champion Justin Allgaier, who started the race atop the points standings, saw his title hopes take a hit after a wreck on Lap 70. Despite his best efforts to return to the race, he was forced to retire with a flat tire and brake issues, finishing 36th. However, Allgaier remains optimistic about his chances, citing the bonus points he accumulated during the regular season.
