Top Soccer Official Warns of Player Strike Amid Fixture Congestion Crisis
The president of a prominent European soccer league has expressed concern that players may go on strike due to the increasingly crowded fixture schedule. With the expansion of international club competitions and the revamped Club World Cup, this season is set to be the longest in history.
Players, including a prominent midfielder from a top-tier team, have spoken out about the possibility of taking drastic action to address the issue. The league president acknowledges that their concerns are justified, stating that “we have reached certain limits that we need to say enough already with this situation.”
Top coaches from several teams have also voiced their concerns about player exhaustion, with one suggesting that players might be willing to take a pay cut in exchange for a reduced schedule. The league president agrees, saying that “this is a maths issue… we are not thinking about the mental aspect of the players, who cannot withstand that rhythm of competition.”
The solution, according to the president, lies in reducing or eliminating certain competitions. However, this would require cooperation from international governing bodies, which have been criticized for not consulting with leagues and teams when creating the calendar.
In other news, the league president has confirmed that plans are underway to stage a regular season game in Miami, pending approval from various governing bodies. While the exact timing is uncertain, the goal is to find a suitable break in the season to make it happen.
