The San Antonio Spurs have announced that guard Devin Vassell will be sidelined for the start of the upcoming season as he continues to recover from offseason surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right foot. Vassell, who averaged a career-high 19.5 points last season, has been limited to non-basketball activities and his status won’t be updated until November 1, ensuring he’ll miss at least the opening week of the regular season.
The 24-year-old has been dealing with the injury since late last season, which cut short a campaign that saw him play in 68 games, including a career-high 62 starts. In addition to his scoring prowess, Vassell also averaged 4.1 assists and shot 47.2% overall from the field and 37.2% from 3-point range.
Vassell is a crucial piece of the Spurs’ rebuilding efforts, alongside rising star Victor Wembanyama. After signing a lucrative five-year extension last year, Vassell is expected to be a mainstay of the roster moving forward, along with offseason acquisition Chris Paul.
On a more positive note, the Spurs announced that centers Zach Collins and Charles Bassey are expected to be ready for the season opener against the Dallas Mavericks on October 24. Collins suffered a dislocated shoulder in April, while Bassey tore his ACL in December.
