The WNBA’s Coaching Carousel: What’s Next for the Chicago Sky?
In a surprise move, the Chicago Sky fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season. Weatherspoon, a former WNBA player, had established a strong bond with rookie forward Angel Reese, who had a league-record 15-game double-double streak. Despite the Sky’s 13-27 record, there seemed to be positive momentum building for the 2025 season.
Reese expressed her disappointment on social media, saying she was “heartbroken” by Weatherspoon’s departure. The move raises questions about the Sky’s direction and what’s next for the franchise.
The Sky have had eight coaches since their inception in 2006, with James Wade leading the team to their only championship in 2021. Weatherspoon was hired last October, tasked with rebuilding the team after several key players left in free agency. Despite the challenges, the Sky showed promise, particularly with Reese and fellow rookie Kamilla Cardoso forming a strong post duo.
However, the team’s 3-point shooting and point guard play remain significant needs heading into the offseason. The Sky owe a pick swap to the Dallas Wings, which could impact their draft strategy. Meanwhile, Chennedy Carter, who led the team in scoring, will be a restricted free agent, and her future in Chicago is uncertain.
Weatherspoon’s departure also raises questions about her future in the WNBA. She and Curt Miller, who parted ways with the Los Angeles Sparks, are both suddenly out of jobs. It’s possible they could switch teams or explore opportunities with the three new franchises joining the league in the next two years.
The coaching carousel doesn’t stop there. Seattle Storm coach Noelle Quinn expressed concerns about her future after the team’s season-ending loss, while Latricia Trammell’s job security with the Dallas Wings is uncertain after a disappointing season. The Washington Mystics, who started the season 0-12 but rallied to push for a playoff spot, may also be considering coaching changes.
As the WNBA offseason heats up, one thing is clear: coaching stability is crucial for team success. The Sky, Wings, and Mystics will need to make tough decisions to get back on track, while Weatherspoon and Miller will be looking for new opportunities to prove themselves.
