The Retro Revival of a Campy Classic
As a kid, I never quite grasped the appeal of the original Batman TV show. I knew it was supposed to be cool, with its outrageous gadgets and iconic vehicle. But I was too young to appreciate its campy, satirical vibe. That was until I revisited the show in college, and suddenly, it all clicked. I finally understood why adults in the 1960s were drawn to its over-the-top humor and subtle sensuality.
The show’s formula was a clever blend of 25% humor and 75% sex appeal, which flew right over my childhood head. But upon rewatching, I realized that the show’s creators had woven a web of innuendo and suggestion that was both clever and risqué. A prime example is the sizzling chemistry between Adam West and Julie Newmar – a level of sensuality that even Game of Thrones couldn’t match.
Recently, I stumbled upon some astonishing revelations about Adam West’s personal life. According to reports, he was a true ladies’ man, with a reputation that allegedly got him banned from Aspen, Colorado, for 15 years. While I couldn’t confirm the accuracy of these claims, it’s clear that West was a master of seduction, with a string of high-profile conquests, including actresses Natalie and Lana Wood, and Raquel Welch.
West himself confessed to having numerous trysts, often with multiple partners at once, and even romping with groupies in his dressing room between scenes. His only limitation, he joked, was the physical constraints of his iconic Batman costume, which made quickies a necessity.
While the Aspen ban might be an urban legend, it’s undeniable that West lived a life of unbridled passion and excess. His exploits have become the stuff of legend, and it’s easy to see why. If the city of Aspen didn’t actually ban him, they probably should have – it would have only added to his already impressive reputation as a ladies’ man.
I’m grateful to have had the chance to meet Adam West in person, shortly before his passing in 2017, at a ComicCon event where he appeared alongside Burt Ward. Although I didn’t get a photo with them, I did get to pose with the iconic Batmobile – a childhood dream come true. As I look back, I’m struck by the realization that I was in the presence of a true Hollywood legend, a man whose exploits both on and off screen continue to captivate us to this day.
