In a recent development, tennis sensation Emma Raducanu has become the latest big-name player to withdraw from the prestigious China Open tournament. The 21-year-old Briton cited a foot injury as the reason for her withdrawal, which comes as a blow to fans eagerly awaiting her return to the court.
Raducanu’s injury woes have plagued her since her historic US Open victory in 2021. She has undergone surgeries on her ankle and wrist, and has been working her way back up the rankings. Currently ranked 54th in the world, Raducanu suffered her latest setback during the Korea Open quarterfinals against Daria Kasatkina.
“I’ve sprained some ligaments in my foot, which need a bit more time to heal,” Raducanu explained. “Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to participate in Beijing, but I’m hoping to get back to competing as soon as possible.”
Raducanu joins an impressive list of players who have opted out of the Beijing event, including former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, world number one Iga Swiatek, and three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur.
Meanwhile, the men’s ATP 500 tournament in Beijing has also suffered a significant blow, with world number two Alexander Zverev withdrawing due to pneumonia. The 27-year-old German had recently helped Team Europe secure a thrilling 13-11 victory over Team World in the Laver Cup.
Despite these withdrawals, the China Open promises to be an exciting event, with four of the top six men’s players, including world number one Jannik Sinner, set to take part. The draw for the tournament is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, and fans can’t wait to see who will come out on top.
