A College Student’s Kicking Dreams Almost Crushed by Deceptive Dealership
Earlier this week, a remarkable story emerged about a Purdue student who won a Kicks for Cash competition during halftime at a football game against Indiana State. The student successfully kicked field goals from 20, 30, and 40 yards, supposedly securing a two-year lease on a car as the grand prize. However, the dealership later reneged on their promise, citing a technicality that the 40-yard kick was 0.07 seconds over the allotted 30-second time limit.
The dealership’s decision sparked widespread outrage, with many calling out their deceitful tactics. In an attempt to salvage their reputation, the dealership hired a high-profile PR crisis team to spin the narrative in their favor. But the public was not fooled, and the dealership was subsequently dragged online for their questionable business practices.
In a surprising turn of events, the dealership has since reversed their decision and offered the student a choice between a two-year car lease or a $5,000 cash prize. Additionally, they will donate $5,000 to the Ross-Ade Brigade, the student section at Purdue’s home football games. While this gesture is a step in the right direction, many feel it doesn’t go far enough to rectify the situation.
The dealership’s initial actions were a clear attempt to take advantage of a college student, and their half-hearted apology does little to restore trust. To truly make amends, they should consider offering a more substantial prize, such as a car or a significantly larger cash award. Anything less would be seen as an insult to the student and the public.
It’s worth noting that this dealership has a history of producing cringe-worthy local TV commercials, which may have contributed to the widespread disdain for their actions. Meanwhile, the $5,000 donation to the Ross-Ade Brigade could be better utilized as funding for NIL deals to support Purdue’s struggling football team. As the Boilermakers prepare to face off against Notre Dame, they could use all the help they can get.
