In the heat of competition, athletes often find themselves in situations where their actions can be misinterpreted. It’s possible that a stray glob of spit might fly through the air, landing who-knows-where. After all, these players are moving at incredible speeds, and sometimes their bodily functions can’t keep up.
However, when it comes to certain teams, it’s hard to give them the benefit of the doubt. The New Orleans franchise, in particular, has a reputation for being one of the most unsavory in the sports world. And Payton Turner’s recent behavior only adds to that notion.
The initial hit on DeVonta was questionable, to say the least. The lack of a whistle from the referees was surprising, considering the clear helmet-to-helmet contact. But what really took the cake was Turner’s decision to dive headfirst onto DeVonta as he lay on the ground, helmetless and vulnerable. And if that wasn’t enough, he seemed to intentionally spit on DeVonta as trainers rushed to his aid.
It’s appalling behavior, and it’s hard not to wonder if the entire franchise is comprised of individuals with questionable character. It’s as if they attract a certain type of player who embodies a win-at-all-costs mentality, no matter how dirty the play.
This incident was just one of many during the game, with Trevor Penning pulling a similar stunt on Darius Slay just minutes later. It’s clear that this team has a culture of dirty play, and it’s hard to feel anything but disdain for them.
In the end, any win against such an unsavory opponent is a welcome one. While it might not have been the prettiest victory, it’s still a win nonetheless. And who knows? Maybe next time, the opposing team will be able to take matters into their own hands and even the score. Until then, it’s a small consolation to know that teams like this will always be held accountable for their actions.
