In a thrilling matchup, star running back Derrick Henry led his team to a 28-25 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, rushing for an impressive 151 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns. Despite being a free agent last March, Henry never seriously considered joining the Cowboys, who had a need at running back after losing Tony Pollard. Instead, he signed with the Baltimore Ravens, a decision that ultimately paid off for both parties.
After the game, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones praised Henry’s performance, saying, “Hats off to him. He had a great day today. I have all the respect in the world for him.” However, Jones also made it clear that the team couldn’t afford to sign Henry, citing salary cap constraints.
The Cowboys have opted to go with a running back by committee approach, featuring Rico Dowdle, Ezekiel Elliott, and Deuce Vaughn. While this strategy has yielded limited results, with the trio combining for just 167 yards on the season, coach Mike McCarthy remains optimistic about the team’s running game.
Meanwhile, the Ravens’ rushing attack was unstoppable, with quarterback Lamar Jackson adding 87 yards on the ground. The team’s 274 yards rushing on 45 attempts left the Cowboys’ defense reeling, with edge player Micah Parsons lamenting the lack of cohesion on the team.
The Cowboys’ struggles on defense have been a recurring theme this season, with the team allowing 557 rushing yards through three games, the most since 1963. Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence acknowledged the need for improvement, saying, “We’re not having our stuff together on defense where we’re playing 11-man football… It’s all frustrating. Having a game plan, but not following the game plan.”
As the team looks ahead to their Thursday night matchup against the New York Giants, Lawrence emphasized the importance of playing fundamental football, saying, “Play pro football. Do what your coaches teach you to do. Play your gaps. Play your blocks. Stay in your gap.” With the Cowboys’ season hanging in the balance, it remains to be seen if they can turn things around and get back on track.
