Venturing beyond the surface level of league standings can provide valuable insights into which teams are poised to rise or fall in the upcoming season. One prominent analyst has made it a habit to use data-driven metrics to identify the top contenders for improvement or decline in the NFL each year. However, applying this approach to the NBA proves to be a more daunting task. In fact, a significant number of teams from last year’s predictions failed to meet expectations, highlighting the complexity of the NBA landscape.
Personnel changes and incentives play a significant role in shaping a team’s trajectory. The Toronto Raptors, for instance, were expected to improve last season based on statistical indicators, but the loss of key players like Fred VanVleet and subsequent trades of OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam led to a drastic decline in their win total.
