NEW ORLEANS — A key player on the Saints’ offense is set to undergo surgery this week, forcing the team to regroup and adjust their strategy. According to sources, the team’s star center will miss several weeks due to a groin injury, marking the second significant blow to the Saints’ offensive line this season.
The news comes on the heels of the team’s 15-12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, during which the injured player exited the game just three snaps in. Despite efforts to fill the gap, the Saints struggled to find their footing, posting their worst offensive and rushing performances of the season.
Losing a leader like this is a significant setback, according to quarterback Derek Carr. “It hurts, but that’s just the way it goes in football. You’ve got to be able to adapt and move forward.”
To fill the void, the Saints turned to left guard Lucas Patrick, who stepped in to take the injured player’s spot. Olisaemeka Udoh, another free agent addition, came off the bench to fill Patrick’s position. Coach Dennis Allen praised Patrick’s efforts, saying, “I thought he did a nice job going in and filling in. It was a challenge, but that wasn’t the difference in the game.”
With the injured player out for several weeks, the Saints will need to rely on their depth chart to get the job done. Patrick, who has significant experience at center from his time with the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, is officially listed as the backup and is expected to play a key role in the team’s upcoming games.
