In a move aimed at reviving their struggling offense, University of Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables announced that Michael Hawkins Jr. will take the reins as starting quarterback for the team’s upcoming matchup against Auburn. This change comes on the heels of a disappointing 25-15 loss to Tennessee, during which incumbent starter Jackson Arnold struggled to find his footing.
Hawkins, a talented true freshman from Frisco, Texas, made a significant impact when he replaced Arnold in the second quarter, completing 11 of 18 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing 22 yards on the ground. His ability to scramble and extend plays proved to be a much-needed spark for the Sooners’ offense, which had been stifled by the Volunteers’ defense.
Coach Venables praised Hawkins’ athleticism, noting that he was able to evade pressure and make plays with his legs when the pocket broke down. With Hawkins at the helm, the Sooners will be looking to regain their footing and get their season back on track.
