The Unprecedented Dominance of India’s Chess Team
In a historic moment, India’s chess team has made a groundbreaking achievement, securing a double gold at the 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad. For the first time in over-the-board official Olympiads, India has surpassed its previous best of bronze medals, claiming the top spot in both the Open and Women’s categories. The team’s exceptional performance was led by 18-year-old prodigy Dommaraju Gukesh, who won an individual gold medal, alongside three other teammates: Arjun Erigaisi, Divya Deshmukh, and Vantika Agrawal.
Gukesh’s performance was nothing short of phenomenal, as he defeated three players with 2700+ ratings and drew one other in that bracket, earning him a spot among the elite few to have crossed 3000 in tournament performance ratings at a major classical chess tournament.
Divya Deshmukh, also 18, showcased remarkable skill and determination, pulling off incredible comebacks and securing an impressive score of 9.5/11, with a TPR of 2605. Her performance earned her a whopping 17.5-point gain in the live ratings, the largest increase in the women’s top 50 rankings during the Olympiad.
