BOSTON – Despite a year filled with incredible achievements, including an NBA championship and a gold medal, Celtics star Jayson Tatum acknowledges that there were moments of disappointment along the way. Tatum’s coach, Joe Mazzulla, likely sees opportunities to motivate him in those setbacks.
When asked about motivation, Tatum replied, “In real time, it was tough. But if you know my coach, it makes sense.” Although Boston secured its record-breaking 18th NBA title and Tatum won his second gold medal, attention was drawn to his teammate edging him out for Eastern Conference finals and NBA Finals MVP honors, as well as Tatum’s absence from two Olympic games.
Tatum confessed that the summer was challenging at times, particularly during the Olympics, where he faced a unique circumstance he hadn’t experienced before in his playing career. However, he emphasized that he doesn’t need extra motivation coming into the season, believing that everything happens for a reason.
The Celtics star reflected on the positives, including winning a gold medal, being around top players, building friendships, and enjoying the Olympics with his family. With a new season approaching, Tatum’s focus shifts to helping Boston claim its 19th championship banner. Having finally secured his first title, he admitted that it feels different coming into the season as a champion, rather than striving to win one.
“It does feel different,” Tatum said. “Not from a place of being complacent… It’s all about what you’re trying to achieve, and we’re trying to achieve greatness.” He emphasized that the goal is no longer just to win one championship, but to maximize their time and be mentioned among the greatest Celtics teams and players.
