The City of Brotherly Love is abuzz with excitement as the hometown heroes clinch the National League East title for the 12th time in franchise history and the first time since 2011. The team’s All-Star shortstop, Trea Turner, rode into the clubhouse on a platform truck stacked with cases of beer, hoodie up and goggles on, ready to join the celebration. The team’s victory marked a triumphant return to the postseason, with a 6-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night.
Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto homered, and pitcher Aaron Nola provided a glimpse of what’s to come for the entire franchise if they make a deep playoff run. The team’s manager, Rob Thomson, emphasized the importance of winning the division and securing a first-round bye, saying, “That was our main goal in spring training… Do all the things we can to kind of set us up for the postseason.”
As the team celebrated, the Phillie Phanatic stormed the field, waving a 2024 flag, and fans cheered and filmed the momentous occasion. Schwarber acknowledged the significance of the division title, saying, “Winning the division is a big thing… It’s not an easy division to win. It definitely will be a cool thing.”
With a postseason berth already secured, the team is now focused on earning the top seed in the National League playoffs. The Phillies hold the No. 2 spot behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and would earn a first-round bye if the standings hold.
Manager Thomson emphasized the importance of winning the division and getting the bye, saying, “If we get home field throughout, that’s a bonus. But I won’t put our players in danger to get there.” The team has two games left against the Cubs and closes the season with a three-game set in Washington.
The Phillies’ playoff appearances have become the norm, but this season’s success has been particularly sweet. As All-Star reliever Jeff Hoffman said, “I feel like it’s the best atmosphere in sports… It feels like it’s 50,000 vs. nine. It’s always a good feeling when you step on the field.”
With their sights set on the top prize, the Phillies are determined to bring home their third World Series championship. As slugger Bryce Harper said, “Being able to come home and do it here, in front of the best fans of baseball, in front of a fanbase that showed out for us each night, it was just a lot of fun.”
