In a thrilling opening match of the Women’s Super League, Arsenal and Manchester City battled to a 2-2 draw. The highly anticipated fixture saw the return of Vivianne Miedema, Arsenal’s all-time top scorer, to her former stomping ground, now donning a Manchester City jersey.
Miedema almost made an immediate impact, narrowly missing the target with a stunning strike from distance within six minutes of kickoff. However, it was Frida Maanum who broke the deadlock, giving Arsenal the lead. The Gunners dominated the early exchanges, creating chances and showcasing their attacking prowess.
Just before halftime, Miedema silenced the home crowd with a 41st-minute equalizer, heavily deflected off Laia Codina. The Netherlands international’s nonchalant celebration was a testament to her respect for her former club.
The second half saw Manchester City take control, with Jess Park’s stunner putting them ahead. Arsenal’s Beth Mead and Alessia Russo were introduced off the bench, but it was Mead who ultimately leveled the score with an 81st-minute strike, securing a share of the points.
Miedema’s emotional return to the Emirates Stadium was marked by her impressive performance, which included her first WSL goal for Manchester City. Her manager, Gareth Taylor, praised her adaptation to the new team, saying, “I think we just need to coax that talent out to be the very best for us, and the early signs have been good.”
As Miedema looks to prove herself in her new surroundings, she remains focused on her game, stating, “I think that’s the only thing I need to focus on right now and keep on going. I’m happy I stayed in England; I’m happy I stayed in the league. I feel free, I feel like I can be myself, and that’s really what I needed.”
