In a surprising turn of events, veteran netminder Robin Lehner has expressed optimism about reviving his professional hockey career. Despite being absent from his team, Lehner revealed to a prominent sports outlet that he is awaiting a resolution to his current situation.
When questioned about his absence, Lehner cryptically stated, “Everyone is aware of the reasons behind my absence. I’m patiently waiting for things to get sorted out.” The enigmatic response has sparked curiosity among fans and pundits alike.
Lehner’s last major update came in August 2022, when he underwent hip surgery, prompting his placement on long-term injured reserve. Since then, the team’s management has maintained a tight-lipped stance on his status, fueling speculation about his potential return to the ice this season.
However, Lehner was recently required to undergo a mandatory medical evaluation to maintain his LTIR status, which allows his team to exclude his salary from their cap calculations while ensuring he receives his full compensation. With his contract set to expire, Lehner stands to earn $4.4 million in salary this season.
The team’s general manager, Kelly McCrimmon, shed some light on the situation, stating, “Robin remains unfit to play due to his ongoing health issues. We’re working closely with the league and the players’ association to navigate the complexities of this situation. Once we have a clearer direction, we’ll be sure to share more information.”
