The Pittsburgh Steelers are dealing with a significant blow to their defensive lineup as edge rusher Alex Highsmith is expected to miss multiple weeks due to a groin injury. According to sources, Highsmith’s injury does not require surgery, but he will be sidelined for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Highsmith suffered the injury during the first half of the Steelers’ 20-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3, which improved their record to 3-0. This is not the first time Highsmith has dealt with a groin injury, as he missed time during training camp and also battled a similar issue three seasons ago.
“I need to take a closer look at my training regimen and make some adjustments,” Highsmith said, reflecting on the injury. “I work hard, but I need to change some things.”
Since being drafted in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft, Highsmith has established himself as a reliable starter alongside fellow pass rusher T.J. Watt. In his absence, the Steelers will rely on rookie Nick Herbig, who impressed with two sacks in just 19 snaps against the Chargers. Highsmith has recorded one sack this season and has a total of 30.5 sacks for the Steelers since being drafted.
