The University of State College has made a strategic decision to schedule their highly anticipated “Electric Encounter” against the University of Washington this year. While the crowd’s energy is undeniable, someone has clearly decided to shift the focus towards lesser opponents, rather than the traditional powerhouses, to highlight their Home Field Advantage. Since the pandemic, the university has hosted teams like Auburn, Minnesota, and Iowa, and this year, they’ll face Washington, projected to finish 10th in the conference.
This sets the stage for a thrilling matchup this week, as the undefeated State College squad takes on the 4-0 Illinois Fighting Illini in a primetime game. With a 17.5-point favorite advantage, it’s the perfect opportunity to unleash the full force of their fan base. Coach James Franklin has called for an “Electric Atmosphere” and made it an unofficial game. In my opinion, it’s the right move – night game, home favorite, undefeated matchup, and national television. It’s going to be electric in Happy Valley!
However, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema seems unimpressed, dismissing the idea of “Electric Energy” with a sarcastic remark. But he knows exactly what it means, and as a 17.5-point underdog, he’s about to experience it firsthand. Why provoke the fans, who will already be loud and rowdy, and give them even more motivation to cheer on their team? If Illinois pulls off an upset, Coach Bielema can celebrate all he wants, but State College is no ordinary stadium. He’s just given the home team a reason to turn up the volume, ensuring he won’t be able to hear himself think on Saturday night. I’m predicting a State College blowout – bring it on!
