As the autumnal chill sets in, the thrill of the spooky season begins to take hold. What better way to get into the mood than with a chilling horror movie? Netflix’s latest offering, “The Deliverance”, is the perfect way to set the tone for Halloween. With a stellar cast, including the incomparable Glenn Close, this film is sure to send shivers down your spine.
I went into this movie with no prior knowledge, except for the brief description on the streaming platform and a haunting image of Close. Her presence alone was enough to pique my interest, but I had no idea that acclaimed director Lee Daniels was at the helm. Daniels’ previous work on “Precious” showcased his ability to tell a powerful story, even if it was a difficult watch.
In “The Deliverance”, Daniels weaves a captivating tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The entire cast delivers standout performances, making it easy to become invested in their characters. The first two-thirds of the movie are expertly crafted, building tension and suspense. However, the plot takes a slight detour towards the end, delving into religious themes and relying heavily on CGI and special effects.
Just when you think the movie is losing its momentum, Close drops a bombshell of a line that will leave you speechless. I’m not exaggerating when I say my jaw hit the floor. It’s a moment that makes the entire film worth watching.
What’s even more unsettling is that the movie is based on true events. The real-life inspiration behind the film sent chills down my spine, and I found myself seeking comfort in a familiar TV show before I could drift off to sleep.
Daniels’ decision to change the location of the paranormal house from Gary, Indiana to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is an interesting choice. While it doesn’t detract from the overall experience, it does raise questions about the creative decisions behind the film.
The on-set paranormal activity, which required a real-life pastor to intervene, adds an extra layer of creepiness to the movie. It’s a reminder that some things are better left unexplored.
While “The Deliverance” may not be the scariest horror movie out there, it’s a gripping supernatural thriller with great acting and character development. Despite some flaws, it’s a welcome addition to the rotation of scary movies to watch during the spookiest time of the year.
