The Las Vegas Aces celebrated their 2023 WNBA championship with a grand ceremony, complete with rings featuring 34 diamonds to represent their regular-season victories. Owner Mark Davis and Commissioner Cathy Engelbert beamed with pride as the team flaunted their championship swagger. However, the celebration was short-lived, as the team faced an investigation into alleged salary cap circumvention and impermissible benefits just four days later.
The investigation centered around a $100,000 sponsorship deal offered to each Aces player by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). While the LVCVA CEO insisted the deal was legitimate, the WNBA hired outside counsel to investigate the matter. The investigation is ongoing, with no further comment from the league.
On the court, the Aces struggled to find their footing, losing four of their first six games. Injuries and off-court distractions took their toll on the team’s performance. Star players A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Kelsey Plum all experienced dips in their production, and the team’s defense suffered as a result.
Despite their struggles, the Aces remain focused on their ultimate goal: a three-peat. Wilson, in particular, has been phenomenal, breaking records and earning her second consecutive MVP award. The team has rallied around her, finding joy in the midst of adversity.
As the playoffs approach, the Aces face a tough road ahead. They’ll need to overcome their struggles and find a way to silence their critics. But with their championship mettle and newfound sense of joy, they’re ready to take on the challenge. As one player put it, “It’s Aces vs. Everybody.”
