The Maryland Masters have proven once again why they’re the team to beat in the Professional Lacrosse Championship. With two titles under their belt, they’re the only franchise with multiple championships in the league’s history. This season, however, has been a wild ride. After a shaky start with a 2-4 record, it seemed like their reign might be coming to an end. But the Masters regrouped and won four straight games, becoming the hottest team heading into the playoffs.
In their quarterfinal matchup against the Mavericks, the Masters showed they’re not just riding momentum – they’ve also got a bit of luck on their side. Down 9-7 in the third quarter, the Mavericks had scored three consecutive goals, and it looked like the Masters were running out of steam. That’s when a bizarre sequence of events unfolded. A wayward pass was knocked down, somehow avoiding any Masters players, and deflected in off a Mavericks defender. The result? A rare two-point goal that tied the game at 9-9 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Masters took advantage of the momentum shift, scoring two more goals in the final quarter to secure an 11-10 win. It was a thrilling finish, with that fluky two-point goal proving to be the difference-maker.
Now, the Masters are just one win away from another championship appearance. They’ll face off against the top-seeded Thunder on Saturday, a team they’ve historically dominated and already beaten 16-12 this season.
On the other side of the bracket, the Fury advanced to the semifinals after a grueling 8-4 win over the Stampede. The Stampede’s offense struggled to find its rhythm, and the Fury will now face the Blaze in the semis. It’s shaping up to be an exciting weekend of lacrosse action.
