The prestigious Air Force Academy, founded by Lieutenant General Hubert Harmon, has a rich history of excellence on the football field. A significant contributor to this success is the enthusiastic support of the cadets, who pack the stands and create an electric atmosphere. According to Head Coach Troy Calhoun, the energy of the cadets has often disrupted the opposing team’s timing and led to penalties, giving the Falcons a distinct home-field advantage.
Only two institutions, Army and Navy, can now boast of having their entire student body attend every home game. The student section is an integral part of the college football experience, fostering camaraderie, school spirit, and pride among students. It’s not uncommon to run into classmates or acquaintances who share a passion for the game, rehashing the previous weekend’s matchup.
However, a recent decision has raised eyebrows. The reasoning behind this change is to “maximize attendance across all 30 intercollegiate athletic home events.” It’s puzzling to understand how this goal can be achieved by limiting student attendance at football games. Moreover, no other sport has conflicting schedules with the football team.
The true motives behind this decision remain unclear, but one thing is certain – competing against the Air Force Academy with a full contingent of cadets in attendance adds to the excitement and atmosphere of the game. This tradition will be deeply missed.
