**Injury Sidelines Star Third Baseman, Casting Shadow over Team’s Playoff Hopes**
The Boston Red Sox suffered a significant blow to their postseason aspirations when they placed their star third baseman on the 10-day injured list due to left shoulder inflammation. The move likely marks the end of his season, dealing a severe setback to the team’s chances of securing a wild-card spot.
During Friday’s extra-inning loss to the Minnesota Twins, the 27-year-old slugger exited the game in the 11th inning, finishing the night with one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts in four at-bats. The following day’s matchup against the Twins was postponed due to inclement weather, rescheduled as part of a Sunday doubleheader.
According to Red Sox manager Alex Cora, the injury occurred when the third baseman tweaked his shoulder while taking swings in the batting cage. Despite attempting to play through the discomfort, it became clear that he was not himself. “He made some adjustments throughout the game, but ultimately, there just wasn’t much power there,” Cora explained. “We could see it in his mechanics and bat speed.”
With only eight regular-season games remaining, the Red Sox find themselves five games out of a wild-card spot in the American League. The injured third baseman, who will turn 28 next month, has had a standout season, boasting a.272 batting average,.354 on-base percentage, and.516 slugging percentage, accompanied by 28 home runs and 83 RBIs.
